A Simulation of radiolysis of chloride solutions containing ferrous ion

Hata, Kuniki; Inoue, Hiroyuki*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 56(9-10), p.842 - 850, 2019/09

To investigate the effect of dissolved species from steels on the radiolysis processes of Cl$$^{-}$$, radiolysis simulations of solutions containing both Cl$$^{-}$$ and Fe$$^{2+}$$ were carried out. The results showed that the generation of radiolytic products (H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$, O$$_{2}$$ and H$$_{2}$$) increased mainly by the addition of Fe$$^{2+}$$, and a drop in the pH was caused by the hydrolysis of Fe$$^{3+}$$. This pH drop enhanced the reactivity of Cl$$^{-}$$ with $$^{.}$$OH, which induced additional generation of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ and O$$_{2}$$. These results show that low concentrations of Cl$$^{-}$$ (1 $$times$$ 10$$^{-3}$$ mol/dm$$^{3}$$ = 35ppm) in the presence of Fe$$^{2+}$$ could influence the generation of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ and O$$_{2}$$ during water radiolysis. However, it is considered that these effects of Fe$$^{2+}$$ and low concentration of Cl$$^{-}$$ on water radiolysis are less important for corrosion of steels due to the low concentrations of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ and O$$_{2}$$ generated. The other process, such as dissolution of iron enhanced by FeOOH, might predominantly induce corrosion under the conditions of solutions with low concentrations of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ and O$$_{2}$$.

Development of removal method for ferric and manganese ions with fibrous graft-adsorbent

Takahashi, Manabu*; Tanaka, Kazuya*; Tamada, Masao; Aoi, Toru*

Kankyo Kogaku Kenkyu Rombunshu, Vol.41, p.229 - 235, 2004/11

Fibrous metal adsorbent having iminodiacetic acid was synthesized by radiation-induced grafting glycidyl methacrylate on nonwoven fabric and subsequent chemical treatment. The degree of grafting calculated by increasing weight after grafting reached 170 % for reaction time of 2h at 40 $$^{circ}$$C. The adsorption characteristics of ferric and manganese ions were evaluated by using the resulting adsorbent with 2.1 mmol/g-adsorbent function group of iminodiacetic acid. Each distribution coefficient of ferric and manganese ion deceased with increase of another coexist ion. Both ferric and manganese ions were completely removed by the adsorbent column at the space velocity of 1000h$$^{-1}$$. Adsorption capacities of both ions were reduced to 80% after 5 times reputation of adsorption and desorption.

This report presents a summary of literature survey about geochemical reactions which are important to evaluate the redox conditions in the near field rock mass and buffer. The results of literature survey are summarized as follows; (1)Minerals including ferrous iron and organic materials in the rock mass are important reductants. Initial stage after closure of repository, oxygen will be consumed by pyrite, because the reaction rate between pyrite and oxygen is relatively fast. (2)It is possible to estimate the redox capacity for reductants by rock (mineral)-water iteraction experiment in a laboratory. And it is expected that the ferrous iron-rich rock and higher porosity rock may have bigger redox capacity. (3)It is possible to estimate the oxygen consumption rate by reductants such as minerals including ferrous iron. The rate law and rate constant for the oxidation reaction of ferrous iron in the solution are also determined. As a conclusion, it seems that we can evaluate kinetically the evolution of geochemical conditions in the near field rock mass and buffer by excavation of drifts, based on data derived from these existing literatures.

Radiolysis of water containing ferrous and chloride ions

Hata, Kuniki; Sato, Tomonori; Inoue, Hiroyuki*

no journal, ,

To evaluate the integrity of structural materials in stagnant water in primary containment vessels (PCVs) of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants, corrosion prediction is important. Because of high-dose rate in the PCVs, oxidative molecules, such as H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ or O$$_{2}$$, are generated from water radiolysis. For the corrosion prediction of materials in PCVs, the amounts of these molecules should be estimated. Stagnant water in the PCVs contains small amounts of impurities, such as anions from seawater or groundwater and metal cations derived from materials by corrosion. Some of these impurities show high reactivity with radiolytic species and would affect the production behavior of the oxidative molecules. In this study, the influence of Cl$$^{-}$$ on radiolysis of solutions, which contains small amount of Fe$$^{2+}$$, was investigated by radiolysis simulation. Acidification of the solutions due to reactions of Fe$$^{2+}$$ under irradiation enhanced the reaction of Cl$$^{-}$$ with radiolytic species, which resulted in the increase in the amounts of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$.

Effect of ferrous ion addition on radiolysis of chloride ion solutions

Hata, Kuniki; Inoue, Hiroyuki*; Sato, Tomonori; Chimi, Yasuhiro

no journal, ,

Radiolysis simulations of dilute solutions of Cl$$^{-}$$ and Fe$$^{2+}$$ were carried out to understand the effect of low-concentrated Cl$$^{-}$$ on generation of radiolytic products in irradiated solutions containing Fe$$^{2+}$$. The results showed steady-state concentrations of radiolytic products, H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$, O$$_{2}$$ and H$$_{2}$$, increased by adding Fe$$^{2+}$$, and additional generation of these products were observed due to addition of Cl$$^{-}$$. The reactivity of Cl$$^{-}$$ in water radiolysis was not significant at neutral pH. However, pH drop caused by hydrolysis of ferric ion, which is produced by the reaction of Fe$$^{2+}$$ with hydroxyl radical, enhanced the reactivity of Cl$$^{-}$$ with hydroxyl radical. This result indicates low concentration of Cl$$^{-}$$ could have an impact on generation of the oxidative products from water radiolysis if Fe$$^{2+}$$ coexists with Cl$$^{-}$$.
